Important note: This risk assessment remains live throughout the pregnancy period and as such regular consultation between employee and line manager should be maintained using the above control measures as best practice.
Each time a consultation is carried out a date should be placed below. HR / OHA can provide further guidance on consultation frequency.

Guidance

Although our offices are a low risk environment, it is important to carry out this risk assessment as soon as an employee tells us she is pregnant.  The assessment outlines possible hazards that a pregnant employee may encounter at work, as well as the minimum control measures that should remain in place throughout their term.

The ‘severity of harm’ column has been completed for you. Please tick the most appropriate box for the ‘likelihood of harm’ and ‘risk rating’. To do this think about what their job role requires them to do on a day to day basis.

To ensure the working environment is suitable a DSE assessment must be carried out at the same time as this risk assessment.

A copy of both assessments must be kept by the line manager and both originals sent to the H&S Manager, VH2 Bournemouth.  The assessment should be regularly reviewed in case anything has changed and notes made below.

When the pregnant employee takes their maternity leave, the line manager should forward a copy of their final assessment to the H&S Manager.

Travelling for work:  Please consider the following points when asking a pregnant employee to travel for work.

  • Travelling to and from other sites during or post pregnancy will not normally raise issues, however the individual’s health and welfare should be regularly reviewed.

  • Travelling with heavy bags should be stopped with other means of delivery used where necessary, e.g. courier or colleague.

  • During the latter stages of the pregnancy it is advisable that travel for work is significantly reduced or stopped.
